According to the New York City Police Department, the 20-year-old woman was pushing the baby in a stroller when a man shot her in the head at close range at about 8:23 p.m. EDT, WABC-TV reported.

Update 9:34 p.m. EDT June 30: The woman who was fatally shot was identified by police as Azsia Johnson, 20, WPIX-TV and WNBC-TV reported.

“She was a wonderful mother, " Johnson’s mother, Lisa Desort, told WPIX by telephone. “She dressed them in brand new clothes, wanted nothing but the best for her children.”

Desort said she had been using a tracking app to keep tabs on her daughter, the television station reported. When the app indicated Johnson was in a hospital, she called her daughter but received no answer. Moments later she was visited by NYPD detectives.

“I fell to the ground,” Desort told WPIX.

Original report: Both the woman and the child were taken to an area hospital, according to the television station. The woman was pronounced dead at the hospital at 9:20 p.m., NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell said at a news conference. The child was not harmed, WPIX-TV reported.

The shooting occurred near Lexington Avenue and East 95th Street in Manhattan’s Upper East Side.

“It shows just how this national problem is impacting families,” New York City Mayor Eric Adams said at the news conference. “And it doesn’t matter if you are on the Upper East Side, or East New York Brooklyn. The oversaturation of guns endangers people.”

Deputy Commissioner John Miller told WPIX that he believed the child and woman were related.

The alleged shooter fled the scene on foot, Sewell told reporters.

The investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made, Sewell added.
