Officers help homeless family found living in minivan

LAS VEGAS — Five officers came to the aid of a family Wednesday that had lived the last two weeks out of a minivan.

A Clark County School District Police Officer patrolling the east side of Las Vegas saw two children sitting on the side of the road next to a van and learned the family had recently become homeless, according to a department post on social media.

Another officer arrived shortly after and provided new car seats. A third officer, who is certified to install them, did so with the help of a fourth officer. A fifth officer arrived with a couple of gift certificates to Subway and a box of food. The officers then followed the family to a gas station and filled up their tank before taking them to a shelter to help them find other available services.

The community has offered an outpouring of support to the officers who helped and the family who needed it, officials said.

“The 5 officers are very humbled by all your likes and positive comments. One officer commented to me that it’s his duty to serve and protect,” the department said on social media. “The offers from the community to assist the family have been amazing.”
