Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has non-surgical procedure

NEW YORK — Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg underwent a non-surgical procedure Wednesday.

Ginsburg, 87, had a bile duct stent revised. The stent has been placed last summer, the Supreme Court said in a statement.

Ginsburg underwent “a minimally invasive” non-surgical procedure at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

Doctors said stent revisions were a common occurrence and the procedure was done to minimize the risk of future infections.

On July 17, Ginsburg announced that she had been receiving chemotherapy since May to treat a recurrence of cancer, but added that she has no plans to retire from the Supreme Court.

Doctors found lesions on her liver following a regular scan and a subsequent biopsy in February. Ginsburg said she had seen “positive results” since beginning chemotherapy on May 19.

Ginsburg was appointed to the Supreme Court in August 1993 by President Bill Clinton, filling the seat held by Byron “Whizzer” White. She was the second woman appointed to the Supreme Court.
