Texas man arrested for allegedly banging on windshield with knife after crash

AUSTIN, Texas — A man in Austin, Texas, has been arrested after he allegedly banged on a windshield with a knife, threatening a victim after a crash.

Austin Police Department officers were called out to the 3400 block of Ed Bluestein Boulevard on Nov. 28 for reports of a person with a knife on the hood of another car, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by KTBC. The man was allegedly banging on the windshield with a knife.

When officers arrived in the area, they found the man, James Palmer, 42, no longer on the hood of the car. He was acting as if nothing had happened. According to KTBC, the victim explained to the officer what had happened following a crash between his car and Palmer’s car.

The victim told officers that he was driving in the left lane near the 400 block of Montopolis Drive when Palmer tried to change lanes, hit his car and then drove back into him harder, causing the victim’s car to spin out, according to KXAN. Palmer reportedly did not stop at the scene and kept driving.

The victim said he decided to go home, but then saw Palmer’s car pulled over in the 1300 block of Ed Bluestein Boulevard. According to court records obtained by KXAN, the victim tried to talk to Palmer, but Palmer allegedly started to run toward his car with a knife. Palmer allegedly began hitting his window with the knife. Palmer also allegedly stabbed his front left tire before going back to his car and leaving again.

The victim then called 911. He told the dispatcher that he saw Palmer’s car about 30 years away, according to court records obtained by KXAN. Palmer then allegedly ran up to the victim’s car again with the knife and jumped on the hood of the car, hitting the windshield yelling.

According to court records obtained by KXAN, the victim told police that Palmer only stopped and got off the hood of his car when people started coming out of a building in the area to see what was going on.

Palmer allegedly admitted to officers that everything the victim said was true, according to court records obtained by KXAN. However, the affidavit said that Palmer reportedly claimed the victim did not let him merge and blamed the victim for the initial crash. He also allegedly said he began banging on the victim’s car to get him to leave.

During a search, officers located a gray folding knife in Palmer’s car, according to KXAN.

Palmer has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, accident involving damage to a vehicle and criminal mischief equal to or great than $100 but less than $750, according to court records obtained by KXAN.
