Tropical Storm Vicky forms in Atlantic, not expected to threaten land

Tropical Storm Vicky formed Monday morning in the Atlantic Ocean, becoming the 20th named storm of the year.

Officials with the National Weather Service’s National Hurricane Center said the storm would likely be short-lived and that it was not expected to threaten land. As of 11 a.m. the center of the storm was about 350 miles west-northwest of the Cabo Verde Islands, officials said.

Forecasters expect Vicky to weaken into a tropical depression over the next few days and to degenerate entirely by Thursday.

Vicky is one of five tropical systems spinning in the Atlantic Ocean on Monday. Tropical Storm Sally poses the most immediate threat to the U.S. as it’s expected to strengthen into a hurricane later in the day. It’s expected to make landfall Tuesday around southeast Louisiana or Alabama.

Forecasters are also monitoring Tropical Storm Teddy, Tropical Storm Rene and Hurricane Paulette. The Category 2 hurricane, which has maximum sustained winds of 100 mph, was about 65 miles north of Bermuda on Monday morning.
