Indianapolis police told WISH-TV that an 8-year-old girl and 10-year-old boy were with other children playing inside of an inflatable bounce house when a gunman opened fire at the cookout.

“At this time, it’s still very early on in the investigation, but we have initial reason to believe that this was an unprovoked attack, that the suspects arrived on the scene and opened fire on a crowd that was having a Fourth of July celebration,” Capt. Mike Leepper of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department told WISH-TV. Leepper told the station that the suspects “opened fire into the crowd and then fled the scene.”

Police have asked people from the community to come forward with information as they try to find suspects in the shooting.

“Bullets have consequences. When they leave guns, they don’t stop until they hit something,” Leepper told WXIN. “As you look behind me and you see these officers and detectives, a large majority of them, they have young children at home. So that cuts deep. Them, the fire department, the medics that responded to the scene, to have to treat a small child, and they’re not treating a small child for falling out of a bounce house and scraping their knee, they’re treating them because they were both shot by individuals who just pulled up and opened fire into a crowd of people.”

Officers told WXIN that the two children were taken to the hospital by ambulance, but that the adult who was shot drove himself to the hospital.

Police did not say how many suspects they may be looking for. “We want to make sure that our detectives have time to vet the information that they’ve been given, that it’s accurate, before it’s given out to the general public,” Leepper told WISH-TV.
