Washington Football Team releases RB Derrius Guice after domestic violence arrest

The Washington Football Team released Derrius Guice on Friday after learning the running back had been arrested two hours earlier on domestic violence charges.

Guice, 23, was charged with one count of strangulation, three accounts of assault and battery and one count of destruction of property, a spokesperson for the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office told The Washington Post.

According to the sheriff’s office, the charges were related to three separate domestic violence-related incidents earlier this year, ESPN reported. They allegedly occurred on Feb. 14, March 13 and April 17 at Guice’s home in Ashburn, Virginia.

In a statement, the team said it learned of the domestic violence accusations on Thursday, ESPN reported.

“We immediately alerted the National Football League and have continued to work with them during this process,” the team said. “We then met with Derrius to inform him that he was excused from all team activity pending a review of this matter. This afternoon we learned that there were multiple charges filed against Derrius. Upon review of the nature of these charges and following internal discussions, we have decided to release Derrius immediately.”

Guice hired Peter D. Greenspun, a criminal attorney in Northern Virginia who has worked on several high-profile cases, the Post reported.

Guice, who played collegiately at LSU, was a second-round pick for Washington in the 2018 NFL draft. He played in five games and started once for Washington in 2019, rushing for 245 yards and scoring two touchdowns. Injuries have limited his time on the field, WJLA reported.

In 2018, Guice was lost for the season when he tore the ACL in his left knee after a rushing attempt, the Post reported.

Guice returned in 2019 and was injured after starting the season opener at Philadelphia. A torn meniscus in his right knee caused Guice to miss his next eight games, the newspaper reported. After returning in November, Guice was injured again when he sprained his left knee against Green Bay on Dec. 8.
