Winter storm: Texas university uses swimming pool water, melted snow to flush toilets

ABILENE, Texas — Resident assistants at a Texas university found new ways to keep dormitory bathrooms operating during the water shortage in the area, using water from the campus swimming pool and melting snow to fill the void.

The RAs at McMurry University in Abilene filled up coolers with water from the pool to keep the toilets running after learning that water service was temporarily unavailable for much of the city, KTAB reported.

Sam Ferguson, the university’s athletic director, tweeted a photograph of resident assistants filling up buckets with water.

“With water service temporarily unavailable, our RAs, with the help of @McMURRYFOOTBALL, filled up coolers with water from the pool so that our bathrooms remain operable,” Ferguson tweeted.

In a Facebook post, the university noted that some students used melting snow as a source for toilet water.

“We were able to devise a temporary solution for our on-campus residents by filling toilets with water from the campus swimming pool and using melted snow as a backup, the university wrote. “Thanks to our football team and other volunteers who helped carry this water to the residence halls.”
