Wisconsin police officer hailed as hero for saving baby girl’s life

MADISON, Wis. — A Wisconsin police officer is being hailed as a hero after he saved a baby girl’s life, authorities said.

According to WMTV, the incident occurred about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at a home on Jupiter Drive in Madison. Madison police Officer Andy Deuchars responded to a report of a baby in distress and arrived to find a woman outside holding her 3-month-old daughter, who wasn’t breathing, authorities said.

"I immediately observed [the baby], whose eyes appeared like they were bulging out of their sockets," Deuchars wrote in the incident report, according to WMTV.

Deuchars said he held the baby, turned her over and "delivered five back blows between her shoulder blades" before beginning chest compressions with his fingers, according to the report.

"He then rolled her over again, and following more back blows, the baby girl began crying," the department wrote in a news release. "She appeared to have spit up baby formula."

Emergency responders took the child to a nearby hospital for examination, authorities said. By Wednesday, she had returned home and was "doing much better," according to the release, which added that Deuchars is being nominated for a livesaving award from the department.

"This is why we do the job – to try and help people," Deuchars told WMTV .
