Hoboken police said a 23-year-old woman, who has not been identified, climbed over the railings to get onto the pier but because of the snow did not realize there was a gap between it and the dock and fell into the frigid water, WABC reported.

“(The woman) was out with friends and her brother when they wanted to get a better view of New York City and take pictures,” police said, Hoboken Patch reported.

She fell 10 feet into the river. Her brother first tried to pull her out but was unable to and called 911. Police responded and found her around 3:23 a.m. waist deep in water holding onto a piece of metal, Hoboken Patch reported. Officers reached into the hole while other officers held their legs, WABC reported.

“It was unsettling, and it was not safe for us to go out on the pier, because we didn’t know if the pier was compromised, or if there was a hole,” Hoboken Police Officer Duke McCourt told WABC. “It was all covered with snow, and it was chaotic, and we’re just happy everything worked out.”
