Pitt has lost its defensive leader for the season.

Senior linebacker Quintin Wirginis’ college career is likely over after he sustained a non-contact knee injury in practice Tuesday and underwent surgery Wednesday, the Panthers announced.

The Panthers play at No. 5 Notre Dame on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast on Channel 11.

Wirginis, a star player at Fox Chapel Area High School and captain for Pitt, leads the team in tackles, tackles for loss and forced fumbles.

"Our entire team is certainly heartbroken for Quintin," head coach Pat Narduzzi said. "He was having an absolutely outstanding senior season, on and off the field, and we are very sorry it ended prematurely due to injury.”
