Beechview native, CEO of Peach Bowl envisions Pitt taking on Penn State in Dec. 30 match

PITTSBURGH — Could Pitt and Penn State square off in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl on Dec. 30 in Atlanta? At least one Pittsburgh-area native could see it happening.

Gary Stokan is from Beechview and is the CEO and President of the Peach Bowl. According to our partners at TribLIVE.com, he’s in town for the Pitt game against Clemson this weekend and will also take part in several other events.

“Wouldn’t it be tremendous to have Pitt and Penn State,” Stokan said.

The teams have never met in the postseason but if the stars align, it is possible. If Pitt beats Clemson on Saturday, it would have a clear path toward winning the ACC and a berth in the championship game. If the ACC champion is not in a semifinal game, the Peach Bowl could be where that team lands.

Penn State, meanwhile, is 5-1 and 2-1 in Big Ten play this season. If they win out, they would make it into the college football playoffs. If they don’t win out, they could be an at-large team in the Peach Bowl depending on how the selection process goes.
