Race the Pierogies: Pirates unveil ‘virtual fan experience’

The pierogies will race after all.

On Saturday, the Pirates announced what they call the “Virtual Fan Experience,” where they will take in-game entertainment staples, ballpark activations and more, and make them available digitally through Pirates.com, MLB Ballpark and the Pirates’ social media channels.

Among the features of the "second screen experience" are the seventh inning stretch, the t-shirt toss, player Q&As, Baseball Quiz, the hat shuffle, Sunday's soloist rendition of God Bless America, Fast Bucs -- the Family Feud style show -- and, of course, the great Pittsburgh pierogy race.

There will also be highlights of the best moments in PNC Park’s first 20 seasons.

“This season is like no other and no matter how hard we try, PNC Park will not be the same without our fans in attendance cheering our team on,” said Pirates president Travis Williams. “The ballpark experience is such an important part of baseball and while, for now, we cannot allow fans into PNC Park, we will do everything possible to bring this experience to them at home. We encourage our fans to follow along and join in the fun during this unique season.”

The virtual experience will officially launch on July 27, the date of their home opener against the Brewers.
