PITTSBURGH — Yet again, Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt has been named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week after Monday’s win over the Cleveland Browns.
Watt had four sacks during the Week 17 matchup, bringing his season total to 21.5. With one game remaining, he needs one to tie or 1.5 to break Hall of Famer Michael Strahan’s NFL single-season record of 22.5 sacks from 2001.
Watt is one of only two players in NFL history to have 20-plus sacks in 14 or fewer games since sacks became an official statistic in 1982 -- and that’s with Watt missing two games due to injury and part of a third.
Since the start of his career, Watt has had 71 sacks.
This is the third time this season Watt has won AFC Defensive Player of the Week, having previously done so in Week 6 and Week 13. Overall, it’s the sixth time he’s received the title.
