Penguins resign D Juuso Riikola for 2 years

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Penguins resigned one of their defensemen after a disappointing stint in the postseason bubble.

Juuso Riikola is coming back to the Penguins on a two-year deal that carries an average annual value of $1.15 million.

Riikola, 26, played in 36 games for the Penguins last season, including four games as a forward due to various injuries. He was a healthy scratch for each of the Penguins’ four playoff games against Montreal.

In his two seasons with Pittsburgh since coming to the U.S. from Finland’s top professional league, Riikola has scores three goals, nine assists and was a plus-six in 73 games.

“When he is on his game, Juuso has shown the ability to be a solid contributor for our team,” said Rutherford in a release. “We feel he is going to take the next step forward in his development.”
