Penguins sign Chad Ruhwedel to one-year extension

PITTSBURGH — The Penguins have signed defenseman Chad Ruhwedel to a one-year contract extension, Jim Rutherford announced on Friday.

Ruhwedel, 30, was already under contract for the 2020-21 season in the final year of a two-year contract that carries a cap hit of $700,000. The extension signed today is for the 2021-22 season and carries a cap hit of $750,000.

“Chad is a reliable, depth defenseman who is a great teammate,” Rutherford said in a team release. “He keeps himself in great shape and is always game-ready, which is important for a player in his role and the success of our team.”

The 2019-20 season was Ruhwedel’s fourth in the Penguins’ organization. He appeared in 41 games this season, primarily filling in on the third defense pairing alongside Jack Johnson.
