Penguins sign Weber, adding depth to ailing blue line

PITTSBURGH — No, not that ex-Predators defenseman Weber. The other one.

The Penguins on Wednesday signed Swiss defenseman Yannick Weber to a one-year, two-way contract worth $700,000 at the NHL level to provide some relief to their ailing blue line. He must clear waivers at noon Thursday before he can join the team.

It’s not clear whether he’ll have to go through the league’s COVID protocol before he can practice or play in a game.

Weber, 32, is a right-handed shot, and stands 5 feet 11, 200 pounds.

Weber spent the last four seasons with the Predators, appearing in 41 games in 2019-20 and scoring one goal and two assists. Originally drafted No. 73 overall by the Canadiens in 2007, Weber has played in 497 NHL games over 12 years, recording 28 goals and 66 assists. He attended Nashville’s training camp on a tryout contract this winter, but did not make the team.
