Ones to Watch: Nathan Chen

BEIJING, China — Nathan Chen has quite a list of accomplishments:

1. Student at Yale University
2. Six-time U.S Figure Skating champion
3. About to compete again on the biggest figure skating stage

Chen’s first Olympics four years ago didn’t go as well as he had hoped, but he is one of the favorites in Beijing.

He’s confident, not just because of the work he’s done on the ice, but because he’s learned to relax off the ice.

Chen is studying statistics at Yale and said data science has helped him.

“School also made me realize there’s a whole fun, happy side of life that doesn’t necessarily have to revolve around grinding all the time and you can have a little bit more fun and relax and I think that’s really good for our mental health and just being happy in general,” he said.

Chen also said music has helped him calm down and find some peace. He likes listening to music but can also play a little guitar and piano.
