PITTSBURGH — The votes are in for the Skylights RE/MAX Select Realty Coach of the Year. The winner is Marty Rieck from South Park.
Rieck led the Eagles to the playoffs in a season that saw fewer teams make the WPIAL Playoffs in each conference. Rieck was humbled by the honor, telling Channel 11, “I certainly think there’s alot more deserving folks out there, but heartfelt appreciation for the folks that went on and took the time to vote for our program. It certainly means a lot and it’s appreciated.”
The 2020 season saw several games across the WPIAL suspended because of COVID-19, but Rieck believes persevering through those challenges is something that will stick with his team. “The most gratifying part overall this year is the simple fact that we had a season,” said Rieck. “All the coaching staffs out there are to be commended for the simple fact that we were able to have a season. I know at South Park I’m blessed to work with a wonderful staff, and we got solid kids that love the game of football and they’re willing to learn. The fact that we had a season in and of itself, making the playoffs is a beautiful thing but especially for this senior group, the simple fact that we had a season is something I think people are going to remember.”
South Park finished behind 3A Runner Up Elizabeth Forward, but he likes where his team is headed. Rieck said, “Like we say, you gotta win the battle with yourselves, you have to take care of your own house. We’ve got a great group of guys who are coming back and we’re looking forward to great things one game at a time.”
