Air quality alert extends into weekend as warmup continues

PITTSBURGH — A Code Orange Air Quality Action Day has been issued for Saturday by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. It impacts the Liberty-Clairton area, which includes Clairton City, Glassport Borough, Liberty Borough, Lincoln Borough, and Port Vue Borough in Allegheny County.

Temperatures will be in the 70s with plenty of sun this weekend, so you may want to try to limit your time outside if you have breathing issues.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Air Quality Index has color codes for forecasting and reporting daily air quality. Orange represents unhealthy pollution levels for sensitive groups of people.

“An Air Quality Action Day is issued when the AQI is forecasted to be code orange or higher. On air quality action days, young children, the elderly, and those with respiratory problems, such as asthma, emphysema, and bronchitis, are especially vulnerable to the effects of air pollution and should limit outdoor activities,” a news release said.

Temperatures will stay pleasant through the evening hours as well. It will be even warmer next week, with near record high temperatures in the forecast. The next chance of rain doesn’t show up in the forecast until Wednesday.
