How normal are frost, near-freezing temperatures at this time of year?

PITTSBURGH — Colder air is in the forecast and with temperatures dipping into the 30s, frost will be possible from time to time this week. While the low temperatures will be well below the average of mid-40s, it has been known to get this cold in the past.

The record books show the temperature dipped to 34 degrees as late as June 11 in 1972. It also dropped as low as 27 degrees on May 10, 1966.

The latest date of a killing frost in the spring season is May 29, 1894.

It will be a good idea to either bring in or wrap up sensitive flowers and vegetation when frost is forecast which is typically on nights with temperatures in the mid-30s, light winds and clear skies.
