Former downtown Macy's store could become entertainment complex

PITTSBURGH — A Florida-based developer wants to breathe new life into the old Macy’s in downtown Pittsburgh.

Florida-based Frank Entertainment Companies hopes to convert part of the old store into an entertainment venue that includes a movie theater, bowling alley, arcade and restaurants.

"I live down here, and I think it would be a great idea because there’s a lot of families moving in, and they’re going to need things to do with their children other than just ride around on bikes,” downtown resident Carrie Velmire said.

The company has opened similar entertainment venues in other cities including Delray Beach, Florida, Blacksburg, Virginia, and Cary, North Carolina.

Entertainment Companies is in discussions with Core Reality, which has the redevelopment rights to the building.

It’s estimated the project could cost up to $15 million.

The overall redevelopment also is expected to include 311 apartments on the upper floors as well as a 160-room hotel.

Macy’s closed in September 2015.
