11 things to do this Fall around Pittsburgh

Fall is upon us and this means pumpkin picking, drinking apple cider and haunted houses! The weather outside is getting cooler and the leaves are going to begin to change. Here are just a few things to do around Pittsburgh during the fall season:

This farm, located in Monongahela, has a fall festival that started on Sept. 16 and will run through October. The all-inclusive admission includes activities such as meeting farm animals, a corn maze, hayrides and a Storybook Pumpkinland. You can also pick your own pumpkins and apples at an additional cost.

Admission: $14 child | $9 adult | 2 & under fre

The Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium holds a kid-friendly event every year called ZooBoo. They offer two “not-so-spooky” haunted houses, trick-or-treating throughout the zoo, a costume competition and more. This event runs through the rest of the weekends in October.


Admission: Adult $16 | Senior $15 | Child $14 | Zoo members receive free admission.

This Finleyville farm's 48th annual fall festival began Sept. 30 and is taking place every weekend in October. The events offered at the festival include hayrides, a 3-acre corn maze and pumpkin-picking, a petting zoo, live music and more. They even have fresh hot or cold apple cider on their menu!


Admission: Free but most activities require tickets that cost different prices.

This “greatest maze on Earth,” according to its website, is in Mercer. The corn maze opened Sept. 15 and will run through Nov. 5. A giant corn maze is obviously the main attraction but it also has mechanical bullriding, a pumpkin blaster, gemstone mining and a "Trail of Fear," which is a haunted maze.

Kennywood is holding its 16th year of Phantom Fright Nights. According to the website, it has been nominated for USA Today’s 10-Best list of top Halloween theme park events. On top of the many haunted attractions, they will also have 17 rides open, including the Phantom’s Revenge, Exterminator and the Thunderbolt. They also offer RIP Tours at an additional price, which allows you to bypass lines for some of the attractions. Phantom Fright Nights will run through the rest of October.

Admission: Varies depending on where and when you buy your tickets.

Cheeseman Farm, in Portersville, has a pumpkin festival running on weekends through October. Hayrides, a petting zoo, pumpkins and a hay jump are just a few of the activities offered. What it is really known for is its "Fright Farm," which is isolated by more than 650 acres and includes a haunted hayride, corn maze and multiple walk-through attractions. It will run through Oct. 29 and begins at dark.


Admission: Free admission to the pumpkin festival; prices vary for the "Fright Farm."

This event at Kennywood is brand new for 2017 and was created for children 10 and under. This will give kids a chance to enjoy Kennywood fun during the Halloween season as well. The park will have rides open for the kids such as the Merry-Go-Round, the Auto Race and more. It also offers hayrides and pumpkin decorating. Children are welcome to dress in costume.

This haunted attraction located in South Park was called “one of America’s scariest Halloween attractions” by the Travel Channel, according to their website. The haunted attraction spans over 1 mile and offers six attractions including “Torture Tank” and “Hallows Eve.”

This haunted house in Etna was also voted one of “America’s scariest Halloween attractions” by the Travel Channel, according to their website. It offers three different haunts: Infernal, Nocturnia (which is in 3-D and new for 2017, The Sunset Lodge. They also offer an attraction for people 18 years and older called The Basement. You must sign a waiver before you participate. The attraction will run through select dates in October, but will offer an event where they turn off all of the lights and give you a glow stick to walk through on Nov. 3 and 4.

The fleet will hold a Halloween-themed cruise and costume party for kids and their families on Oct. 28 and 29. This two-hour cruise will have games, a dance party, prize giveaways, face painting and more. Kids will also get to meet with some familiar characters. All children will receive a Halloween treat bag when they get off the boat.


Admission: Adult $26 | Child(1-12) $13 | Infants $5.

The museum holds a 21-and-over night five times a year and includes a Halloween themed one called Haunted Museum: Year of the Monster. The museum will hold the event on two days, Oct. 21 and Oct. 27. You are encouraged to come in costume while you dance to music played by a DJ and participate in activities including adult trick-or-treating.
