14-year-old shot, killed during Fourth of July celebration in Rankin

RANKIN, Pa. — A 14-year-old boy was shot and killed in Rankin Monday night.

Police were called to Hawkins Village shortly before 10 p.m. for reports of a teen being shot in the head while setting off fireworks.

The Allegheny County medical examiner’s office has identified the victim as Kennir Parr. Investigators said he was shot in the back of the head and died after he was taken to the hospital.%

"He was a gladiator, athlete and scholar," said Tami Warfield of the Woodland Hills Football and Cher Association. "A living young man."

Twenty-four hours following the the incident, police told Channel 11 that at least four shots were fired into a group of children.

"You see it on the news, and it's a tragedy, but when you know it's someone you know, it's devastating," Warfield said.

Police said Parr and about 30 other people were celebrating the holiday by lighting and watching fireworks, when someone shot him from a short distance away. They do not believe he was the intended target.

Anyone who may have seen or heard something suspicious is asked to contact Allegheny County police. Witnesses may remain anonymous.
