Bank robbery suspect arrested at Pittsburgh International while awaiting flight

A man police allege robbed a bank in Harmar Friday morning and one in Shaler in early November was arrested Saturday while he was waiting for a flight at Pittsburgh International Airport, officials said.

Allegheny County police arrested Robert Charles Stiver, 68, about 2:30 p.m. in the terminal where he was waiting to board a flight to his home in Pompano Beach, Florida. Harmar police Officer A.J. Yonek told

Stiver, who is formerly of Lawrenceville, was carrying about $1,500 and four stamp bags of heroin at the airport, police said.

reported Stiver was not armed when he was apprehended at the airport and was taken into custody without incident.

Stiver is accused of using a Western-style revolver to rob the First Commonwealth Bank around 11 a.m. Friday. Police said he escaped in a rental car with $5,700.

Investigators identified Stiver from surveillance video and images from the bank and a Harmar store he had visited before the robbery. Stiver also matched the description of the man who had robbed an Allegheny Valley Bank on Mount Royal Boulevard in Shaler using a similar style revolver on Nov. 2, police told

Harmar and Shaler police each charged Stiver with felony robbery, theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property and simple assault, according to court records.

Police from Harmar Township, Shaler Township, Allegheny County and the Federal Bureau of Investigation were involved in the investigation and arrest of Stiver,  Allegheny County spokeswoman Amie Downs said in a news release.

Stiver will be transported to the Allegheny County Jail for arraignment on charges related to both robberies, Downs said.
