Deputy rescues boy trapped by his neck under an ATV

BULLOCK COUNTY, GEORGIA — A sheriff's deputy in Georgia is being hailed as a hero for his fast action after an ATV accident last week.

Dashcam video shows the moment he pulled up to the scene, finding a young boy trapped under the ATV.

Deputy Rey Rodriguez has patrolled Bulloch County for a decade.  A call last Wednesday sent him flying down a dirt road where two kids had overturned the family's ATV in the mud.  It left 10-year-old Charlie Waters pinned underneath and his sister in a state of shock.

"When I was able to see the young child, the top of the ATV was sitting right on his neck," says Sgt. Rodriguez.

Rodriguez sprung into action with a new tool in his new patrol car.  "I remembered I'd put a strap in the bag, just in case, and it came in handy that day," he says.

The quick action earned him a lifesaving medal from the sheriff's office and the gratitude of Charlie's mom.  "He should be praised for his quick reaction and just thinking so well and keeping so cool and so calm," says Meridith Waters.

The boy was air-lifted to a hospital and is reportedly now back at home with just minor injuries.
