Family looking for answers after landslide cuts off access

Snow, sleet and heavy rains caused a landslide that’s cutting off access in a Washington County neighborhood.

What used to be a family’s front yard is now a pile of dirt, trees and debris. Tammy Main’s son owns the home on Moore Lane in Scenery Hill. He lives there with his wife and three children.

“I didn’t want them to stay here but he won’t leave,” Main said. “He can’t afford to just pick up and move.”

Saturday, after all the wet weather, the ground gave way.

For Main, the thought of her grandkids playing out in the mess is almost too much for her to bear.

However, they aren’t the only family affected. The dirt and debris landed on their neighbor’s driveway, blocking access to their home. With Christmas just a few days away, a fix won’t happen soon.

The family called North Bethlehem Township and they were told it is private property. Main said the insurance company told them a landslide is not covered.

Excavating companies checked out the slide today. One company told the family it could cost more than their house is worth. That doesn’t include trying to fix the cause of the problem.

“They told him if he starts moving the dirt it may cause more sliding,” Main said.

Main and her son’s family are looking for any suggestions on how to clear the slide.
