PITTSBURGH — Firefighters were called Saturday afternoon to the former Macy’s building in downtown Pittsburgh.
The fire reached six alarms. At one point, heavy smoke was seen billowing from the building on Smithfield Street.
All workers were located and made it out of the building safely. Nobody else was hurt.
Firefighters located fire in an electrical vault in a basement, which spread up an elevator shaft.
The estimated damage is not known.
Macy’s closed in September 2015. The 13-story, 1.2 million-square-foot building was bought for $15 million by Philadelphia-based Core Realty, with redevelopment plans for a hotel, condominiums and stores.
Before becoming Macy’s, the building housed Kaufmann’s department store.
