First Hays eaglet has hatched

PITTSBURGH — The wait for a newborn eaglet in 2016 is over.

The eaglet emerged from its shell at 12:37 a.m. Monday, after its egg began to show signs of a hatch on Sunday.

At 9:53 a.m. Sunday, the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania discovered the first "pip" in one of the eggs.

A pip is the first sign of a hatch.

The nest’s first egg was laid 36 days earlier, so the pip was within the timeline for expected hatching.

The second egg was laid Feb. 16 and is expected to hatch Tuesday.

The third egg was laid Feb. 20. and is expected to hatch Saturday.

The Harmar bald eagles are also sitting on eggs in their nests.
