Former NFL player charged with drug crimes in Aliquippa

A former Aliquippa football star and NFL player turned himself in on drug charges Tuesday.

Tommie Campbell faces numerous drug crimes

After high school, Campbell went on to play for five years with two NFL teams: the Tennessee Titans and the Jacksonville Jaguars. He now plays Canadian ball with the Calgary Stampeders.

While home on the off-season, police said they believe Campbell was selling drugs out of his mother’s house on Irwin Street.

Aliquippa police Chief Don Couch said police went to the home Tuesday morning, and Campbell tried to run and jumped a fence, dropping his team backpack. Inside the bag, detectives found 180 grams of crack cocaine and more than $3,000 in cash.

Campbell is well-known in Aliquippa as a kid with speed and talent who made it to the big time. The police chief said fame clearly doesn’t factor in to who he arrests.

“On the one hand you have this local kid who did good and was in the NFL. On the other hand, I have a job to do and selling drugs is a crime,” Couch said.

Immediately after Campbell turned himself in, his attorney spoke told Channel 11 his client says he’s innocent.

“He says he didn’t do it. He was quite frank about it with the court. He wants his name cleared,” attorney Steve Colafella said.
