Grandmother charged with having 2 pounds of pot brownies

A California grandmother visiting relatives in the Westmoreland County area over Thanksgiving was charged with having two pounds of marijuana-laced brownies.

State police said Norma Jean Francy, 61, of San Diego, had the marijuana-laced brownies individually packaged in 21 plastic bags in the car's trunk and two ounces of marijuana in her purse and under her seat,

A trooper pulled Francy over Sunday evening near the Pennsylvania Turnpike interchange when he saw a Chevrolet Sonic go through a stop sign as it turned onto Route 711 North.

The trooper said he noticed "a strong odor of marijuana."

Francy told the trooper she had just visited a sister-in-law in Mt. Pleasant and was on her way to Johnstown to visit her son and grandkids,

During the traffic stop, the trooper said Francy gave him permission to look inside the trunk of the rental car. He asked her if there was marijuana inside the brownies and she said there was, and that she ate them to help her sleep.

Francy has no prior criminal record, state police said. She was cited with possession of a controlled substance, careless driving and other counts.
