Surprise delivery: Woman gives birth at Nissan dealership in South Hills

PITTSBURGH — A couple arrived at No. 1 Cochran Nissan in Pittsburgh’s South Hills Monday and ended up leaving with much more than a vehicle.

According to a post on the dealership's blog, Adam and Amanda Sherman, both of Slippery Rock, went to the dealership Monday afternoon to have their Nissan Titan serviced.

“Can you wait until the dealership?” Adam Sherman asked his wife. “She's like, ‘Yeah.’ So, I'm like, ‘That's fine.’”

Adam Sherman said he and his 14-month-old son were with a service advisor when someone came out of the service area and said that a woman just had a baby in the bathroom. He had missed a text message from his wife.

Amanda Sherman yelled for help after delivering the baby and a customer who is a nurse stepped up. Adam Sherman then called 911.

“It was just insanely fast. You hear about those stories on TV. I guess I’m one of them now,” Adam Sherman said. “Her due date was Jan. 8.”

The now father of two said he used some parental improvisation to tie off the umbilical cord: the string from his boots.

“They said, ‘Tie the umbilical cord.’ I'm looking for something to tie the umbilical cord, I looked down, ripped my shoelace off and we tied the umbilical cord,” Adam Sherman said.

Sales Manager Doug Ward said he heard a single scream and someone informed him of what happened. He then notified the store's general sales manager, Brett Lewis, who he said didn't believe him.

“When the ambulance came, he said, ‘Oh, I guess you weren't kidding,’” Ward said.

The Shermans told the staff at No. 1 Cochran Nissan that everyone, including baby Heather Lynn, is doing great. Adam Sherman even came back Tuesday to have the work on his truck completed.
