PITTSBURGH — The White House’s budget proposal for 2018, which was released Thursday, seeks cuts to a number of major federal government agencies and proposes the elimination of smaller departments and programs.
More than 60 government agencies and programs would be completely defunded, including public broadcasting. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting supports networks such as PBS, NPR and public television and radio stations across the country.
Patricia Harris, CEO of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, said the cuts would cause “the collapse of the public media system itself and the end of this essential national service.” She’s vowing to fight the proposed cuts.
This isn’t the first time the Corporation for Public Broadcasting has to fight for funding. Pittsburgh’s own Fred Rogers went before Congress in 1969 to speak out against a proposed $10 million cut that year.
Some on the panel were in awe as Rogers spoke. Watch for yourself.
Congress has final approval over the budget.
