Latrobe community reflects on Arnold Palmer's contributions

LATROBE, Pa. — Arnold Palmer is being remembered for his many contributions and the opportunities he gave to other people.

Palmer served as a chairman for the Latrobe Hospital Charitable Foundation, where he helped raise millions of dollars for health care.

"Arnold Palmer was far reaching, and yet he always had time and a lot of desire to see what's going on here,” Dr. Thomas Gessner, of the foundation, said.

Two years ago, on Palmer's 85th birthday, he donated $1 million to his alma mater – Latrobe High School. The field house built is just one of many buildings that bear his name.

"His goal was to make sure all students had opportunities not only in athletics but academics and arts as well," Latrobe School District Superintendent Judy Swigart said.
