Troopers: Son stabs mom to death during confrontation

NESHANNOCK TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A man has been charged with stabbing his mother to death during a confrontation that took place inside her western Pennsylvania home.

Police say 27-year-old Dean Craven stabbed his 57-year-old mother, Lauri, multiple times on Sunday morning. Authorities declared her dead at her home in Neshannock Township, which is about 45 miles north of Pittsburgh.

Craven stayed at the home until police arrived. He was arrested on the front porch of the home without incident.

Dean Craven faces charges including homicide and aggravated assault.

Troopers said Craven called 911, confessed over the phone and told the same story to troopers at the scene.

“He had no remorse at all when talking to us,” State police Lt. Eric Hermick said.

According to the criminal complaint, Craven planned his mother’s death for weeks.

“This was premeditated. He knew he was going to do it. He went over to his mother’s and told us he killed her,” Hermick said.

Inside the home, state police recovered a pointed screwdriver, a stun gun and an electrical cord, the complaint stated.

“She sustained multiple stab wounds. We won't know how many until the autopsy comes back, but it was upwards of more than 60,” Hermick said.

State police said Craven told them his mother was mentally ill and would not seek treatment.

Craven remains jailed without bond Monday evening, and court documents do not list an attorney.
