Lifeguards pull man from bottom of Magee Pool in Greenfield

PITTSBURGH — Lifeguards pulled a 20-year-old man from the bottom of a pool in Greenfield.

Channel 11's Marlisa Goldsmith spoke with Jim Griffen, the director of Citiparks. He says the man was spotted unresponsive at the bottom of the pool.

Two lifeguards, ages 16 and 21, jumped into the water and rescued him. When the man was pulled from the water, he had a pulse but was not breathing, said Griffen. The lifeguards worked to save the man until EMTs arrived.

"Words can't really express how proud I am of my staff and not just these two young ladies, but all our life guarding staff," said Griffen. "They're prepared to do this everyday and the expectation is that everyone comes home safely that enters and visits our facilities."

City officials said the man was in and out of consciousness when he was taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital.

The pool will be closed for several hours.
