4 accused in downtown Pittsburgh T station attack take plea deals

PITTSBURGH — Four of five men who were accused in connection with an attack at a downtown Pittsburgh T station last year accepted plea agreements on Tuesday.

Kevin Lockett told police that five men taunted him with racial slurs before attacking him on the platform at the Wood Street station after the Kenny Chesney concert on May 30.

David Depretis, 20, Kenneth Gault, 21, and Matthew Laplace, 21, pleaded no contest to criminal conspiracy and endangerment charges. They were sentenced to six months’ probation, ordered to perform community service to benefit minorities and undergo drug and alcohol testing.

Ryan Kyle, 21, pleaded no contest to charges of ethnic intimidation, aggravated assault and conspiracy to commit robbery.

The judge revoked his bond. Kyle could be sentenced to three to six years behind bars.

Lockett told Channel 11 News that he was a little disappointed about the plea deals.

“(I’m) a little disappointed. You know, slaps on the wrist. It wouldn't happen the other way around,” he said. “If five black guys jumped one white guy, nobody would be going home.”

The judge also said the defendants will have to pay Lockett’s medical bills.

“They have to live and learn,” Lockett said.
