Coroner: Jet skier was drunk, lost life vest before dying

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Armstrong County coroner said a man was drunk and not properly wearing a life vest when he fell off a jet ski on the Allegheny River and drowned last month.

Coroner Brian Myers says 40-year-old Thomas Duane Uzmack's blood-alcohol content was nearly three times the limit considered legally intoxicated.

The Penn Hills man was also wearing a life vest that wasn't properly fastened, causing it to fall off when the jet ski he was piloting capsized. A boy riding the watercraft had a vest on and swam to safety.

Investigators said Uzmack was celebrating his birthday when he drowned July 13 on the Allegheny River along South Buffalo Township. His body was found about 2.5 miles downriver three days later.
