Driver runs from crashed car after police chase

BALDWIN, Pa. — Police are searching for the driver of a car who led officers on a chase and eventually crashed late Thursday night in Baldwin.

Authorities told Channel 11's Timyka Artist that a car crashed into a guardrail on Streets Run Road following a high-speed police chase.

Clairton Police said that they tried get the driver to pull over in Clairton at approximately 10:30 p.m. Thursday. That's when he took off, leading them on a 12-mile pursuit before crashing the BMW -- a car reported stolen three days ago -- in Baldwin. The suspect managed to escape from the wreckage, but investigators told Channel 11 News that they are confident they know who they're looking for.

Clairton Police Sgt. James Carozza said, "That vehicle was reported stolen out of the city of Pittsburgh to the best of my knowledge. As of right now, we do have an idea who was driving it. We do not have charges filed right now, but we do have a good idea who was driving that vehicle."

Authorities on Friday were in the process of getting a judge to issue a warrant for the arrest of the suspect. They believe that only one person was involved.
