IUP student crushed when jack fails has died

INDIANA, Pa. — An Indiana University of Pennsylvania student has died nearly a week after being pinned beneath a car that fell off a jack near his off-campus residence.

Indiana Borough police said 19-year-old Nicholas Landman, of Grindstone, was injured Nov. 18 while working on the car near the downtown district of the college town about 45 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

Friends told police Landman was working on the car when they left to get food. They returned to find him pinned beneath the car about 20 minutes later.

The Allegheny County medical examiner says Landman died at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh on Monday when his family made the difficult decision to remove him from life-support.

“He was just a pure, good kid -- that’s how I’d describe him,” said Landman’s father, Larry Landman.

Landman had been studying in the sports medicine program of Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

“He lit up a room when he walked in. Everyone loved him,” Larry Landman said of his son.

Larry Landman said his son was a standout football player for Brownsville High School, and was a three-year captain.

Nicholas was also an honor-roll student with a vast network of friends, according to his dad.

“He was just such a good kid,” Larry Landman said.

The Landman family is still making funeral arrangements.
