Local lawmaker pushing for passage of Pennsylvania Fairness Act

PITTSBURGH — While many may assume it’s illegal to discriminate against someone based on their sexual orientation, that’s not the case in Pennsylvania, but one local lawmaker believes now is the time to change things.

Last week, legislators introduced the Pennsylvania Fairness Act, which would make it illegal to discriminate against people based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.

"Most people say that's not possible, but it is and it happens here in Pennsylvania,” Rep. Dan Frankel, D- Allegheny County, said.

Frankel is a cosponsor of the bill and has introduced this legislation several times before only to see it fail. However, with bipartisan support, he believes this year could be different.

"There's is some momentum to get this done and we hope it might even be part of a budget deal at the end of the day,” he said.

Frankel told Channel 11 News that even is the bill fails to pass in Harrisburg, he believes the fight is far from over.

"I think it could happen, and I'm certainly going to hope for it. If it doesn't happen, we'll keep working for it,” he said.

Frankel also made an economic argument for the passing of the Pennsylvania Fairness Act, saying it will only help Pittsburgh businesses grow by being more inclusive.
