Memorial dedicated to fallen Youngwood firefighter

YOUNGWOOD BOROUGH, Pa. — A memorial to a fallen Youngwood Borough volunteer firefighter was dedicated Sunday.

Jeff Wentzel was hit and killed by a train in March while searching for a missing woman in North Versailles.

The E. Jeffrey "Lance" Wentzel Memorial stands outside of the Youngwood Volunteer Fire Department on South Second Street, where family, friends and members of the community gathered Sunday.

"What a beautiful day. The overwhelming support from the community and other fire departments, elected officials, it's a wonderful feeling," said Fire Chief Lloyd Crago.

Wentzel served as a firefighter for 35 years and volunteered at Ground Zero in New York City following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The 5-foot-tall black granite memorial to him is faced by two benches dedicated to past Youngwood firefighters and auxiliary members.
