The accident happened around 11:30 p.m. on Route 30 in Independence.

Officials said 21-year-old William Way had just borrowed the bike from a friend before he crossed the center line and hit a car head-on.

“He had been wanting to ride my bike.  I thought I would be nice and let him,” said Way’s friend, John Jacquay.

Way’s friends were saddened by the news.

“He’s the kid who always makes you smile,” said Way’s friend Emily Allen.

The driver of the car was not hurt.
