Pirates CF Andrew McCutchen wins 1st Gold Glove

PITTSBURGH — Pirates star Andrew McCutchen reaped more accolades for his breakout season Tuesday when he was awarded a Gold Glove as the top center fielder in the National League.

Drew Stubbs of the Cincinnati Reds and Michael Bourn of the Atlanta Braves were the other finalists.

“It’s a tremendous honor to win an award like this,” McCutchen said in a statement released by the Pirates. “To see your name with guys like Roberto Clemente, Andy Van Slyke and Bill Mazeroski is pretty special.”

McCutchen, 26, is the seventh Pirates outfielder to win the award. Hall of Famer Clemente, a right fielder, won it 12 seasons in a row from 1961-72. Center fielder Van Slyke won five Gold Gloves.

Voting was conducted among major league managers and coaches, who were not allowed to vote for players on their own teams.

This season, McCutchen led all NL center fielders in games played (156) and innings (1,364) and ranked second in fielding percentage (.997) and errors (one). He was third in the league in total chances (371) and putouts (367).

With a .327 average, McCutchen was the runner-up in the NL batting race behind Buster Posey (.336). McCutchen also had the second-best on-base percentage (.400) and third-best slugging percentage (.553) in the league.

McCutchen is among the leading candidates for the NL MVP Award. The winner will be announced Nov. 15.

Also, Piratefest will be held Dec. 14-16 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. The first night is for season ticket-holders. General admission tickets for Dec. 15-16 go on sale Thursday.
