Pittsburgh grocery stores -- who has the best prices?

PITTSBURGH — Most of us hit the supermarket at least once a week.

"My wife, she'll go through the sale ads for food and she'll check off of the three and make out a list and we'll go from store-to-store," said shopper Michael Driscoll.

Channel 11 went to Aldi, Bottom Dollar, Giant Eagle, Kunh’s, Save-A-Lot, Shop ‘n Save and Walmart all on the same day and compared the prices of the same eight items

SHOPPING LIST

  • 1 Gallon of Whole Milk
  • 1 lb of Bananas
  • 1 lb of 80%/20% Ground Beef
  • 1 dozen Large Eggs
  • 1 10oz bag of Classic Lay's Potato Chips
  • 1 2-liter of Coke
  • 1 pkg of White Bread
  • 1 12oz box of Cheerios

We found that the prices of milk, bananas, bread and cheerios were pretty close at each store, but other name-brand items had a big price difference.

The Lay’s potato chips ranged from $1.99 on sale at Giant Eagle up to $3.50 at Shop ‘N Save and Save-a-Lot.

When we tallied our totals, Aldi was the cheapest at $15.59.

It’s important to note that Aldi is a discount chain that primarily carries its own store brands so we had to substitute their brand for Cheerios and Lay’s potato chips.

Walmart was next at $18.49.

Coming in third was Good Cents, Giant Eagle’s discount, at $19.87.

Only 40-cents separated the remaining four stores.

At Kuhn’s, our eight items totaled $20.23.

Our grand total at Save-a-Lot was $20.43.

Shop N’ Save was a penny more at $20.44.

Our highest total was at Giant Eagle at $20.63.

Keep in mind, some stores often have weekly specials, offer double coupons, accept competitors coupons or offer discounts on gas with your purchase which are other ways you can save your family money.
