Mom, 2 kids rescued after jumping onto porch roof to escape fire

NORTH BRADDOCK, Pa. — A woman and two children who were trapped on the second floor of a burning home in North Braddock Friday morning jumped from a window and onto a porch roof to try to escape.

Firefighters were called to Cliff Street at about 6:30 a.m.

A neighbor smelled smoke and heard the smoke detectors.

"We looked in the doorway and we could see the fire right behind the door,” Latasha Price said. When she could not get into the house, she called the family to alert them to the fire.

The children, ages 5 and 8, jumped off the porch roof and into the arms of another neighbor and a police officer.

"The mom was hanging out the window. the kids were trying to stay with her, so we had to coax them down,” Lennie Brown said.

Firefighters rescued their mother, who had passed out.

All three family members were taken to a hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Firefighters said it was a small fire inside the front door of the home.

The cause is under investigation.
