Police chase ends in crash in Fayette County; driver flown to hospital

REDSTONE TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A police chase Friday afternoon ended in a crash in Redstone Township, Fayette County, authorities said.

The chase ended just before 1 p.m. on Route 166.

From Chopper 11, a black car was visible on the side of the road. The front of the car was damaged and the back window was missing.

A Pennsylvania State Trooper attempted to initiate a traffic stop when police say David A. Wingrove, 39, of Salem Township, fled the scene.

The trooper pursued Wingrove and two additional police vehicles joined the chase, forcing a stop at Jefferies Crossing Road.

Police approached Wingrove, who then drove towards them, striking one of the troopers and nearly hitting the other two.

The troopers fired several shots attempting to stop Wingrove, who rammed the police cars and fled the scene.

The chase continued until Wingrove lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a tree.

Wingrove was extricated by the troopers on scene and treated until medical crews arrived. Wingrove was flown by helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital.

Two of the troopers sustained minor injuries. Wingrove’s condition has not been released.

Pennsylvania State Police are leading the investigation.
