Pennsylvania's critical role in election already evident at Republican National Convention

CLEVELAND — Pennsylvania is among several states that can expect its delegates to have a spotlight on them during this week’s Republican National Convention in Cleveland.

With the vote in Pennsylvania and neighboring Ohio too close to call at this point, politicians have taken notice.

“I think western Pennsylvania is very critical. I don’t think it’s a surprise we are here in Cleveland for the convention. Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan are, in so many ways, the key to the Republican victory in November,” Rep. Mike Turzai said.

Speaker of the House Paul Ryan addressed the Pennsylvania delegates Monday, kicking off the week’s events by stressing how important Pennsylvanians are to the election.

“You could make the decision in this. You could decide this whole thing, Pennsylvania,” Ryan said.

He even attempted to strike a chord with Pittsburghers. %

“I wanna win this election so darnn badly, that I am willing to do this,” Ryan said, while waving a Pittsburgh Steelers Terrible Towel.

While Ryan was supportive of the Republican Party platform, Pennsylvania delegates told Channel 11 News that they were looking to see Ryan fully endorse presumptive republican nominee, Donald Trump.

“I’m looking for unity. I’m looking for a vision, for him to move forward,” North Hills alternative delegate Mike McMullen said.

Trump’s campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again,” is intended to resonate with working-class Midwesterners who want to see a resurgence of jobs to boost the economy.

“It’s very important. It’s in the heartland of America. Take a look at the area around the Great Lakes, we’ve been through a lot. Pennsylvania built this country, western Pennsylvania can rebuild this country,” Rep. Keith Rothfus said.
