Proponents, opponents of Allegheny County's proposed indoor vaping ban weigh in

ALLEGHENY COUNTY, Pa. — More than 50 people attended a hearing Monday to give their input on a proposed indoor vaping ban in Allegheny County.

The Allegheny County Health Department is looking into banning e-cigarette use in all public spaces, including buses, the light rail system, Heinz Field, PNC Park and theaters. Proponents and opponents voiced strong opinions on the proposal Monday.

“They are proposing banning a lifesaving alternative. It’s absurd (and) counterproductive to public places,” Bill Godshaw, with Smoke Free PA, said.

“E-cigarettes can be addictive and it’s nicotine use,” an opponent said. “It shouldn’t be considered normal activity.”

Under the proposed regulation, wherever smoke is prohibited, vaping would also not be allowed.

Vaping imitates smoking, but adding nicotine is optional. Some still argue that some don’t want to be around smokers or vapers.

“What about people that don’t like the smell of perfume or the smell of cooking? Should those products be banned? What about obese people?” Godshaw said. “If we don’t like them, should we ban them? This is inhumane and unethical.”

“If you’re not allowed to smoke a cigarette in a restaurant around children, then you shouldn’t be allowed to smoke an e-cigarette around children,” the opponent said.

Exceptions covered in the proposal include casinos, private clubs and other similar establishments.

Public comments about the proposal will be accepted until 5 p.m. on Aug. 22.
