An Israeli startup company says it has developed a new type of eyeglasses that will make life easier for people who are going blind.(VO)
The company is called Orcam and they've taken tiny cameras that were designed for autonomous cars and adapted them. Users point to anything with text on it and the cameras recognize that text and then read the words back to the user through an earpiece.
Howard Turman used the glasses to read the paper for the first time in 30 years. "Two weekends ago I sat down and read The New York Times. I haven't done that in maybe 30 years. My wife came down, I had a cup of coffee, I'm reading The New York Times, and she was crying."
He says the glasses are very intuitive to use: "I put on the glasses. It recognizes the finger. Snaps the picture. Now it just reads... Even finding out that Dunkin Donuts has a donut I never tried was exciting."
The cameras aren't perfected yet-- they can't read cursive and have trouble with certain fonts and handwriting-- but Orcam says improvements are on the way.
